Act 1 – Before the Madness

Chapter 1 – My Dear кукла

Black Forest, Germany - 1907

Your footsteps echoed down the dark, stone hallway as you made your way to the door. You held a candle in your hand as you reached for the handle. The dank air in the passage was cold yet somewhat humid. You could smell the fumes from a cleaning chemical, causing you to wrinkle your nose.

Not again…

You knock on the door. There is a moment of silence before it swung open, revealing a tall man – your father. He had silvery, platinum blonde hair, dark amethyst eyes that were hidden by a pair of glasses and a rather large nose. Your father was dressed in a long, white lab coat that was slightly stained.

He must have just started working.

Your father smiled down at you.

“My dear кукла!” his pet name for you, “Why are you here so early in the morning?” His voice had a very heavy Russian accent.

“Father, Natalia says that breakfast is ready,” you replied politely. He took off his glasses and placed them in his pocket.

“Ah, I see. Tell her to save me some in the kitchen. I have to finish my project.”

I guess I’ll be eating alone again. You nodded gloomily and were just about to leave. However, your father reached out and placed his hand on your shoulder.

“(Name),” he said comfortingly, “I know Elizabeta died four months ago, but you need to start lightening up. Natalia tells me that you’ve been sitting in your room all day and staring at her picture.” You frowned. You hated causing your father inconvenience or making him worry.

Dang it, Natalia! Why the hell did you have to tattle on me so much! You suppressed your growing anger. You would worry your father even more if he knew your opinions about her.

“Sorry, father. It’s just…I miss mom so much,” you admitted, “It’s kind of lonely without her around. I don’t have anyone else except Mint to talk to.”

“Why don’t you talk to Natalia?” he suggested. Anyone but her.

“No, father, she’s your assistant, and I don’t want to distract her from helping you.” Your father gave you a warm smile.

“(Name), you’re so mature and selfless for a sixteen year old. I’m proud of you.” Your heart leaped when you heard his complement.

“No, It’s nothing father.” Your father paused for a moment, looking thoughtful.

“(Name), you’ll be turning seventeen in a month, won’t you?” You nodded in affirmation.

“I know that you must be bored without Elizabeta’s company, and Natalia and I can’t watch you. Natalia tells me that getting some sun and walking around in the fresh air is healthy for you, especially your complexion.” Why on earth would Natalia tell him that?

“I am willing to grant you permission to go outside and explore the manor grounds. Just don’t leave the gates, okay?” You blinked in surprise. Your father rarely let you go outside without someone else watching you. He was often worried about thieves or trespassers.

“Really?” you asked excitedly; a smile spread across your face. Your father smiled warmly.

“Of course, my кукла, just let me or Natalia know when you’ve gone out and come home before dark.”

“Okay, father!” you replied enthusiastically, “Thank you so muck. Is it okay if I go out today? It’s a pretty day out.”

“Yes, just don’t break my rules!” You reached up and hugged him.

“I would never father,” you said happily and turned to leave the basement.

“Close the door on the way out!” he called after you and shut the door.

Just as you were about to open the door, you heard a series of noises. You paused and listened.

“NO! PLEASE, I BEG OF YOU!” the sound of metal scraping against the wooden floor echoed throughout the empty basement.

“Kolkolkolkolkolkolkolkol………” there was a loud clang and a bloodcurdling scream.

“NOOOOO! HELP ME! HEEELLLPPP!” you shivered and left the basement, shutting the door behind you.

As you hurried towards the dining room, you closed your eyes and sighed.

I know father’s secret. My father is a scientist. He loves his research and locks himself up in the basement. And I’ve always heard things from that lab…Animal and human screams. Even at a young age, I knew what my father was doing. So I pretended that I wasn’t looking. That I didn’t know or hear anything. I feigned ignorance the whole time. Because… I loved father.

Yet, that’s not the only secret I know…

BWAHAHAHAHA I'M BAAAACCCK! Yep, this is the first chapter (more of a prologue) of the Mad Father series. Some events from the game are going to occur at different times, and there'll be a bit of a change in writing style a quarter through. I was having trouble writing it, and I took a hiatus and wrote some other stuff. Still, I'm not finished, but, now that it's summer, I am working on that!
Also, I am going to be posting a side series (Incendiary) that I'll update once in a while, and a RWBY fanfic "From Shadow". Keep your eyes peeled!

Love,
